The Synopsis:

Reputation is everything. When a packed commuter train runs over a body on a stretch of track known to locals as ‘Suicide Mile’, it soon transpires that the man was a victim of a calculated murder. As the investigation evolves and a pattern of murders is uncovered, Detective Sergeant Kay Hunter realises the railway’s recent reputation may be the work of a brutal serial killer. With a backlog of cold cases to investigate and attempting to uncover who is behind a professional vendetta against her, Kay must keep one step ahead of both the killer and her own adversaries. When a second murder takes place within a week of the first, she realises the killer’s timetable has changed, and she’s running out of time to stop him… Will to Live is the second book in a new crime thriller series featuring Kay Hunter – a detective with a hidden past and an uncertain future…

My Thoughts:

Will to live is the brand new novel and the second in the series featuring Detective Kay Hunter. We first met Kay Hunter in the brilliant Scared to Death. As this is a series, and to get the full understanding of Kay and her character, i'd be inclined to tell you to read Scared to Death first. It's such a good series i guarantee you wont be disappointed with either.

As i've been feeling for what feels like an age for book 2 i couldn't wait to get my hands on a copy of it. (Had it been giftwarapped i would have torn the paper off and happily sat in the debris, just so i could get reading it quicker)

So, the burning question, was it worth the wait? Hell yeah it was!

From the first page, reading through the first couple of chapters, i knew it was going to be a cracker. There is no real build up to this, you are thrown straight in at the deep end and don't come up for air until the end. Even then it feels like treading water as i eagerly await book 3 so i can dive straight back in.

Before i get ahead of myself, you need to know about book 2. As it's opening is quite horrifying i'd say it's not for the faint of heart. A woman is led to a railway line, following her dog and is an unwitting witness to the apparent suicide of a man, by a commuter train. But was it a suicide? The following post mortem indicates otherwise. And when more of these murders disguised as suicides happen, Detective Kay Hunter and her team know they are on a race against time to find this sadistic killer.

This book provides everything you could wish for in a police/crime procedural novel. It's a wonderful melting pot of a great and original storyline, a believable and relatable set of characters and an ongoing thread that in itself is enough to keep you reading. This is more than enough to keep you/me, the reader on edge, tensed and fully engaged in this brilliantly written novel.

I thoroughly enjoy Rachels' writing technique, the short chapters combined with the easy flowing style means once you get started reading it's extremely easy to lose track of how much time passes whilst you immerse yourself between the pages.

I'm loving getting to know Kay better, and the personal touches and sensitivity shown in the book ensure it stays grounded and real.

In short, you are in for a dramatic, exciting and tense thriller that is written by an author with a real flair for this genre.
