In the eyes of an angel

What the blurb says:

Camille Ryan is in her final year at Southern State University. Working as a bartender in a local establishment in order to support herself, she knows from her mother’s experience with her alcoholic father not to depend on anyone. That is until travelling businessman Rick Pantanelli decides to visit her bar. He is a handsome, well-off, successful professional and her senior by a full 17 years. Camille is used to doing everything she is expected to do. But when she meets Rick she is swept away by his good looks, his charm and his ability to take care of her. Rick is used to getting what he wants. But when he meets Camille he is swept away by her beauty and her inner fragility. He finds himself believing he can take care of her. Is this belief strong enough to make him a better man?

My thoughts:

I will start off by saying that romance is not a genre i usually read, so i picked this up with an open mind and was curious as to what it might hold for me.

We meet our main character, Camille Ryan, working as a barmaid. It's not a job she particularly likes but it is a job. She needs it to pay her bills and for food as she puts herself through college. Camille begins this journey and we go with her as she morphs from a shy, quiet young lady into a fully grown, self-confident woman.

The story takes us through the stage in her life where she is finding herself. Who is Camille Ryan? She knows who her family is, a mother who struggles to show any emotion at all, is practical in all aspects of her life. A father who has struggled with his alcoholism for many years, but at the heart of his life is always his beloved daughter Camille.

Into her ordered life enters Rick Pantanelli. Rick, a suave, sophisticated older man who finds Camille irresistible. She gets under his skin and affects him in a way he's never experienced before. But work always comes first. He's been chasing promotion for years and that will always be his priority. At 37 years of age, i couldn't help thinking that this man should know better. I can't say i warmed to him myself, and was unsure as to what the attraction was for Camille.

Throughout their relationship, their biggest problem to me seems to be the inability to actually talk to each other, say what they're feeling and what's on their minds. Could this spell disaster for the fledgling relationship? or is it something they can overcome.

There is a cast of background characters here that i think we could have known a bit more about. A bit more of a depth to their personalities would definitely have helped the reader connect to them more.

The author gives us the basics here and the writing style is easy to read. I'm curious as to where the author will take us with the next instalment.
